A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (Dicentrarchus labrax) in commercial hatcheries.

Contributions towards a specific DHA enrichment in the live food Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P.; Devresse, B..
This paper reports on enrichment techniques oriented towards a specific DHA accumulation in the live prey Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia sp. The product used in these experiments (DHA7) is an experimental emulsion with a DHA/EPA ratio 6.7:1. Rotifers enriched with this pure DHA7 emulsion contained up to 69 mg/g DW DHA and a DHA/EPA ratio of 1.6. The DHA/EPA ration could be increased to a much higher level by different enrichment techniques. Dilution of the DHA7 emulsion with coconut oil prior to enrichment also had a beneficial effect on the DHA/EPA ratio of the rotifers. Using a mixture DHA7/coconut oil 3:7 the DHA/EPA ratio could be raised to 4.9. In Artemia DHA levels were slightly influenced...

Effects of feeding (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia during a progressively increasing period on the larviculture of freshwater prawns OMA
Romdhane, M.S.; Devresse, B.; Léger, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P..
Larvae of the freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were reared to post-larvae in a closed recirculation system. Six treatments were designed where freshly-hatched Artemia nauplii were first given to the larvae for 3, 7, 11, 15, 17 and 25 days according to the treatment. After that (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia were given until the 28th day at which time the test was terminated and evaluated. The requirement for (omega-3) Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) for the larval stages of M. rosenbergii was confirmed by this experiment. Moreover, the longer the period of feeding on (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia nauplii , the better the results in terms of...

Larval foods OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Dhert, P.; Devresse, B..
Larval ontogeny in fish is characterized by important anatomical and physiological phases with consequent changes in nutrient requirements. Depending on the size of the larva and the specialization of its digestive system at the initiation of exogenous feeding, live food remains an essential requirement for many marine and some freshwater fish species. This paper reviews the latest developments in the selection, production and/or use of the most commonly used live feeds in larviculture, i.e. micro-algae, rotifers, and brine shrimp.Species-specific dietary requirements are met by application of live food enrichment techniques with selected nutrients. It is very likely that broodstock nutrition and conditioning might influence the nutritional requirements of...
